One of the main tools supporting the use of additional lighting in the mating area is data analysis, more specifically is weaning To the first breeding interval (WMI), this is one of the simplest parameters that can be measured in pig production.

The importance of illumination in pregnancy (especially in new weaned sows and sow mating) has been widely proven and is well known. The effects of sows are subject to the end of the year, and the photosensitive intensity and illumination time of autumn are gradually referred to as “reducing optical cycle.”

The breeding area maintains a reasonable illuminance although it is a well-known fact in the pig industry, in some cases, the aquaculture owner still does not take into account some basic needs of the physiology of the sow.
This case comes from a pig farm in the European stocks of 1100 sows. In order to understand the dynamics of the pig farm, we analyzed the historical reproductive data in the past 4 years of childbirth and pregnancy. Data analysis indicates that the seasonal effect of the mother pig weaning to the first breeding interval is obvious. And this problem presents a year-on-year increase and reaches 13 days in September 2016 (Figure 1). In addition, as shown in Figures 1 and 1, the increase in WMI is aggravated each year, which seriously affects economic benefits.

Figure 1: The interval of weaning to the first breeding in the past 4

The lighting of the area of the pig farm is poor. When visiting the pig farm, it confirmed that the lighting of the entire pregnancy house (including the backup and mating of the mother pig) is very poor. The owner is intensified because of the deep blue glass fiber window, and the window almost completely turned off the light at almost completely when the temperature dropped.

During the exploitation of the pig farm, we recommend that the owner has an additional lighting system to achieve 300 lux, and equipped with timers to ensure 16 hours a day.
The second week of October 2016Outside illumination. As shown in Figure 2, the pregnancy house is divided into two regions through the walls and doors (one for producing the sow, the other for initial production sows). At this point, additional lighting is only installed in one of the regions, and the lighting differences before and after installation are obvious.

Installation immediately saw the effect related to weaning to the first breeding interval, that is, from 9.9 days in the fourth quarter of 2016 to 6.2 days in 2017, the number of non-productive days was reduced by 3.7 days (Table 1).

Table 1. During 2014-2017, the pig farm weaned to the first breeding interval (WMI)

In Europe, the cost of each non-productive day is approximately It is 2-22.2 euros. The pig farm has about 50 times a week. Within 3 months, the pig farm saves about 3700 euros due to the decrease in the non-productive days of mating weaning sows. It can be seen that the scale pig farm increases the lighting of the breeding area and guarantees that the light time of 16 hours a day is critical!
